What Is A Foster Caregiver?
A foster caregiver provides temporary in-home care for a cat or dog until it is adopted. This temporary caretaker will supply the animal's food, water, shelter, exercise, and affection in a safe, nurturing environment. Shelter fees and veterinary costs are covered by TAAG.
Why do We Need Them?
County shelters have limited space and private shelters and rescues are usually full. Most of these healthy and friendly animals in public facilities are euthanized. Pet fosters allow groups to maximize the number of cats or dogs rescued. A foster gets to know the animal and can provide a prospective adopter with detailed information invaluable in the adoption process.
All fostered animals eventually find permanent adoptive homes!
How are Foster Animals Chosen?
Animals are chosen by TAAG members and come from local public shelters, individuals in distressed circumstances, and from neglectful or abusive homes. Temperament is evaluated, but in many cases background is unknown. Animals are vaccinated, tested, and spayed/neutered (if old enough) before being placed in a foster home. TAAG members try to match each animal to an appropriate foster home.
How Long is a Foster Period?
The length of time can vary from a few days to a few months
Can I Adopt the Pet I Foster?
Yes, but you (or anyone you know) must go through the TAAG adoption application and screening process.
Do I Get to Help Choose the Home?
TAAG's adoption application must be approved by two adoption team members. The foster's input is strongly considered!
